As we bid farewell to 2020, and happily welcome 2021 there are going to be some changes that affected our supply chain last year that will forever be in our lives. COVID-19 had logistics companies rethinking their strategy while completely halting other industries. When looking at some of the most impactful stats in the past year the numbers below really can represent how much our lives changed due to COVID-19.

  • In March, the Bureau of Transportation reported that Air travel had cancellation numbers of around 17% — Second only to the following days after 9/11.
  • In November, Digital Commerce 360 released numbers of an increase in digital purchases to 44.4% for Q2, and 37.1% for Q3.
  • GNC closed 1,200 stores, Gamestop closed 320 stores, and JCPenny closed 204 stores just to name a few,

COVID has thrown a wrench in our daily lives and what we call “normal”. Demonstrating how a virus can affect such a boomy market. One of the main victims was small trucking companies that did not have any backup or recovery plans. Other major companies like DHL declared Force Majeure which in turn states that they are not liable for fulfilling certain orders due to acts of God. But in the spirit of redemption, there are some great things that we have to look forward to.

  • The COVID vaccination being released to the public could start preparing us for a regular life again, which in turn will allow industries to bounce back to economic recovery.
  • Big advancements in technologies like autonomous trucks and drones
  • Due to having to deal with COVID last year, there were some incredible leaps in rethinking global supply chains and the increase in focus on risk management.

Although 2020 has really taken the wind out of sails it’s important to understand that we are still in the sea rowing towards a better future. 2021 is still undiscovered and waiting for exploration to be had. We have plenty of opportunities to learn, establish protocols and be thankful for what is in front of us.
